Wuhan Sports University (WHSU), formerly known as Zhongnan Institute of Sports, was one of the first full-time independent higher education institutions of sports established in the early days after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Originally founded in 1953 in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, it was later relocated to Wuhan in 1955 and was renamed the Wuhan Institute of Physical Education the following year, and was under the direct administration of the General Administration of Sport of China. Since 2001 it has been jointly managed by the General Administration of Sport of China and the Hubei Provincial People’s Government. Surrounded by mountains and the beautiful East Lake, the university boasts beautiful campuses, advanced facilities, excellent faculty, rich cultural heritage, and distinctive educational features. It upholds the values embodied in its school motto of "Fair Play, Courage, Honesty, Perseverance, Critical Thinking and Acting" and insists on the teaching philosophy of integrating sports, science and humanities education to cultivate the students morally, culturally and professionally. In 2018, it was selected into the first batch of "double first-class" universities in Hubei Province.
The university’s campus covers an area of 121 hectares, with the East Lake (Zhuo Dao Quan) campus, Canglong Island campus, Wudang Mountain campus and East Lake High-tech Zone (Baoxie) campus. The university has a total enrollment of over 14,680 full-time students (11,800 undergraduates, 2,400 master and doctoral students, 450 junior college students and 37 international students). It is also an organizer of a full-time undergraduate independent college, the Sport Science and Technology College of Wuhan Sports University (also known as Canglong Island campus), with a full-time enrollment of more than 7,400 students.
The university covers eight disciplines, including education, literature, economics, management, science, engineering, art and medicine. Among these, the first-level discipline of Physical Education stands out for its exceptional strengths and distinctive features, and has been awarded the titles of Advantageous Discipline of Hubei Provincial Universities, Innovative Discipline with Outstanding Achievements of Hubei Province, Key Advantageous Discipline of Hubei Province, and Double First-Class Discipline in Hubei Province. It was given Grade A in the fifth round of state-wide college discipline evaluation. Furthermore, several other disciplines have been designated as advantageous and characteristic disciplines (groups) in Hubei Province's 14th Five-Year Plan.
